A rock musician battles crippling tinnitus, abandons his tour, and on an off-road pilgrimage in the Camargue under Saint Sara’s protection, confronts sand, wind, light and the noise inside.
An intimate documentary chronicle of a pivotal chapter in the life of Italian rock icon Piero Pelù. In 2023, a sudden acoustic shock during a recording session—caused by a technical miscalculation while switching headphones—left Pelù unconscious and severely exacerbated the tinnitus he had long been battling against. The incident forced the cancellation of his tour and cast doubt on the future of an artist who had built his entire world around music.
Framed by Pelù’s spiritual journey to the annual gypsy pilgrimage in the Camargue, in honor of Saint Sara the Black—whose name is tattooed on both his forearms—the film becomes both a road movie and a reflection on four decades of living “off-the-road” as a fearless figure in the Italian music scene. Haunted by depression in the wake of the accident, Pelù finds healing in his lifelong muse: music. “I clawed my way out with my nails, my teeth. I poured out my soul, wrote new, compelling material, and unearthed forgotten ideas from my endless archive” he says.
Noise Inside. Don’t call me a Rock Star is not just a portrait of resilience – it’s the raw, poetic journey of an artist refusing to be silenced. Arriving at the gypsy gathering in Camargue—where the faces, eyes, and stories reveal a cruel though vital beauty shaped by generations of cultural crossings—mirrors the worn face, tattoos, and tales of Piero himself. It’s a powerful closing note to a journey where music becomes both a meeting point with others and a path back to oneself.
Piero Pelù is one of the most iconic and charismatic figures in Italian rock. He is best known as the frontman of Litfiba, one of Italy’s most influential rock bands, and for his solo career, which further cemented his image as a bold and provocative performer.
